What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is a holistic design process, using ecology as a basis for designing integrated systems: food production, community, economics, housing, with an embued ethic of caring for the earth, caring for people and sharing the surplus. That's asking us to limit our consumption and design for abundance and then share that abundance with each other.

We can also apply the principals to design our life. Using thoughtful observation look at your daily practices. What elements contribute to a healthy life and which do not? Waste= food. What areas of your life are there wastes? How can they feed into another system?

This is not just organic gardening, it's the garden of our lives. Understand how nature works and then apply it to our lives. Cleaning waste water. Experimenting with alternative fuels. How can we change the patterns of our behavior to match nature's systems?

School Garden program

Hello everyone!

I am looking for input from the community about what topics you think would be important to incorporate into a school garden program. I recently took a position as a school garden supervisor and am interested to get community ideas. The program I am working for is the Engaging Alaskan Teens in Gardening (EATinG) hosted by Calypso farm; I will be working with a small group of 12-18 year olds. We will host a farm stand once a week as well as CSA shares.

I am…

WA State Permaculture/Intentional Community Opportunity

Hi all,

In case you or someone you know is interested in travelling to Northeastern Washington State(near the tiny town of Republic) I have an interesting, perhaps spiritual gig. I'd love if you'd help me get the word out.

I have 2 friends who bought 20 acres of mostly forest and some cleared spots for gardening. There is a big house and 2 cabins on site. They are not yet sustainable, though fully functional. Plans are in the works for…

New Seed Company In Town!

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to introduce 'Foundroot', the open-pollinated seed company that some of you heard about at the potlucks this past winter. We are currently sourcing rare, heirloom, and expertly-bred seeds that are rugged enough for Alaska's growing season and will be transitioning into acclimatizing those seeds so they are bred for this bioregion. We are going to be selling a lot of our most exciting seeds as plant starts this year but have a great variety of seeds available…
